After 1947

In 1947, after the partition of India in two countries as India and Pakistan. These two countries were newly independent of the British Government.
In October 1947, Afghanis attackers (Pashtun Tribesman) rushed over J&K mainly from the district Poonch of Jammu And Kashmir with the help of the Pakistan Government. Maharaja’s force failed to stop them. At that time, Maharaja Hari Singh asked for help from India. Indian Government puts conditions for the fusion in the Indian Territory. On 26 October 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh signed the “Instrument of Accession”, joining the whole of his state to the Dominion of India. After that, India sent troops to Kashmir. After the accession, this gave a born to the first India-Pakistan war.

Pressure from Jawahar Lal Nehru and Sardar Patel compelled Hari Singh to heir his son ‘Karan Singh’ as a Regent of J&K, although he remained the titular king of the state till 1952.
Maharaja Hari Singh was also forced to appoint Sheikh Abdullah, who was the friend of Nehru, as a Prime minister of State. His Son Karan Singh appointed as Governor of the State.
Later, Abdullah was dismissed from his position and sent to jail by Karan Singh.
Nehru & Abdullah planned to banish Hari Singh and sent an exile to Bombay to live. After the 14 years of banishment, Maharaja Hari Singh died on 26 April 1961. As his Last wish, his ashes brought to Jammu spread all over J&K, and immersed in the Tawi River of Jammu.
